Truck Side Guards
- The high ground clearance of large trucks makes an impacted cyclist vulnerable to slipping under and being crushed by the rear wheels.
- Truck side guards are barriers that extend between a truck’s wheels, eliminating the high clearance that poses a danger to cyclists. Side guards have been shown to reduce cyclist fatalities by 61 percent in side impact crashes with trucks. Improved side visibility can prevent side impact crashes before they happen.
- Boston and Cambridge, in partnership with the Volpe National Transportation System Center, require city and city contracted vehicles to be equipped with side guards, convex mirrors, cross-over mirrors, and blind-spot awareness decals.
